African Dance Classes: Afrotonic

About Veronique Thomann

Veronique Thomann discovered African Dance in her native Paris where she learned from Guinean teacher Ana Camara. She then moved to Guadeloupe in the Caribbean and continued her training there for the next five years. Since arriving in Australia, Veronique has developed her skills as a choreographer and performer in African Dance and together with Kwame Selormey (Ghana) founded AFROTONIC. To expand her repertoire, Veronique continues to attend workshops in Australia and overseas with master dancers from Ivory Coast, Ghana, Congo, Guinea and Senegal. She is passionate about African Dance and loves to share with others the joy that it has brought in her life.

About African Dance Classes: Afrotonic

Dance in Africa is not a separate art but forms part of everyday life. Unlike many dances of the west, African dance is not detached from the lives of the people. It is a spontaneous release from the people and translates everyday life experiences - such as birth, puberty rites, hunting, harvest, wedding and death, into movement. Based upon the spoken language, African dance is a source of communication through which it is possible to demonstrate emotions, beliefs, everyday life activities and other reactions through movement.

African dance follows the heartbeat of the drum and connects the dancer with the earth, which Africans believe gives them life. African dance is a community dance that is by nature participatory: the role of performer and audience is interchangeable since both are usually members of the same community. This is why African dance is a great tool for social cohesion in our modern world and helps connect people together despite their differences.

African dance leaves room for self expression and enables each individual to follow his own ‘body language’. Everyone can dance to African music. The idea is to feel the music and express yourself. Let yourself go. It’s also an incredible and fun way to have a great body workout!

Afrotonic Dance & Fitness classes provide a full body workout whilst giving you the freedom to express yourself to the powerful beat of African music. It is an exhilarating and unique cultural experience that makes you feel energized and alive whilst helping to release stress and strengthen body and mind.

Classes are conducted in a welcoming and supportive atmosphere by Afrotonic founders Veronique Thomann and Kwame Selormey and are accompanied as often as possible by live African Drumming so that the students can feel the energizing power of the drums and get a better understanding of traditional African rhythms.

Young and old, children (from 5 years old) and adults, men and women, with or without previous dance experience – anyone is welcome to join and have fun! Sign up a friend for a class and you get a free bonus class.
